Donna, thanks for writing in. It's exciting to hear from someone who raised someone who raised the bird that I ate.

$13 does seem to be a fair representation of the cost of raising a truly free-range chicken. As Erin says, "the happy glow you get from eating local, high quality meat is more than worth that bump in price." One of the questions that this blog wrestles with is, ok, these are our values; how much are they worth?

Incidentally, when I ate the chicken cold, I noticed more of a difference in the quality of the meat from the usual mass-market "free range" bird. It was more pliant, slightly richer, as would befit muscles that had actually been used in the animal's lifetime. Is that worth the extra $5? Only more testing will tell for sure.

As a recovering vegetarian, I teeter on that question quite often but in the end, the happy glow you get from eating local, high quality meat is more than worth that bump in price. I like knowing that I'm supporting people who are doing something they love and doing it well. I just can't eat meat every day, but it just makes me enjoy it all the more when I do.

I am the proud mother of the man and his girlfriend who raise those chickens at Hoosick River Farm.....I wish you would sat a date with Craig and go visit his little farm....His animals really are range-free and antibiotic free....He isn't getting rich but loves what he does and does it well....He and Julie work from sun-up to sun-down and your right $13 is not much for all the labour required to raise that bird.....maybe I am prejudiced but I think they are the best tasting chickens I have ever eaten....Just ask my grandkids how good grandmas fried chicken is lolol.
