Mastering the Art of Loving French Pressing

french_pressThe subject of my—admittedly expensive—coffee habit has been the cause of much ado lately. While I’d like to say it’s much ado about nothing, the simple fact is that I was spending approximately $112 dollars a month on coffee alone—which, on one hand, is ridiculous.

On the other hand, however, it was money I was more than happy to spend. Walking half a mile each way for a four-dollar skim latte added exercise to my newly-sedentary Midwestern life. Plus, it was an extra mile of walking (plus doggie socializing) for my mutt Jack. Best of all, though, it was a chance for a work recluse like myself to get out and interact with friendly baristas and—if I was lucky—bearded coffee connoisseurs. And because I patronized a local, independent coffee shop I was not only supporting fair trade, I was stimulating the local economy, which is an issue very close to my heart.

But when we started this project, I knew it was time to dust off (and wash out, don’t worry) the old Bodum. Read the rest of this entry »

Red Hook Food Movie Flash

UPDATE, THURSDAY, 7PM: It looks like the movie may be rained out, but I’m awaiting confirmation.

Reader Amy H., tireless aggregator of everything worth knowing in this corner of southwest Brooklyn, wrote to tip us off to an interesting screening at the Red Hook Summer Film Festival, this Thursday, July 23, at 8pm at the site of the Red Hook Farmer’s Market:

This week we have FRESH, the Movie.

This is a documentary, [* well... see below. - ap.] but it’s perfect for all of us foodies, locavores, gardeners and anyone generally interested in providing the best they can for their families.

UPDATE: Not only will the event be BYO, but there will be FREE RONNYBROOK ICE CREAM! No word on whether the orgainzers will screen to make sure your beer is locally brewed or your wine is biodynamic…

Sharp Flats: a Bacony Bread Salad

It’s been some week over here at fiftybucksaweek.com. We got served up as a feature on Time Magazine’s Cheapskate blog, and washed it down with a tall glass of haterade. A TV anchor in KCMO sniffed out our own Emily Farris’ star quality, and bid her brace herself for the descent of his camera crew to watch her shop and cook on Monday. Praise poured in from the good people of the foodterwebs. We struggled more or less mightily to deal with it all (Emily, by putting on her cheese medallion and brightest camera-ready smile; Cari, by gardening in the back yard with her growing kid; me, by resisting the temptation to crawl under the couch until it was over, the success of that resistance owing mostly to having to fight the dog for that cool, shady, comforting spot). With all this attention, plus the stresses of our everyday lives (um, anyone know how to block DHCP traffic between physical networks connected by a CentOS router?), it would’ve been easy to forget to cook, feel the stomach gnaw, and order out for pizza.

Not on this blog, chickens. Not this week, anyway, especially not after I overspent last week’s budget by a record margin.

Ooh, Sahadi’s, or, Week Six: Overbudget Again

in line at Sahadi's

in line at Sahadi's

Now why would a guy who’s so notoriously averse to waiting in line that, even when he has the money to pay for them, he eschews and pooh-poohs Brooklyn’s It restaurants in favor or places where he can get seated quickly? For one thing, because the line moves quickly, past signs reading “No Smile, No Service,” and, “Of course, I’m in shape. Round is a shape.” For another, because this swift queue belongs to Brooklyn’s own Sahadi’s.

At this point, I think we can all agree that eating well on 50 bucks a week really isn’t that hard. Sure, there are challenges and we sometimes cheat, but if we are careful at the grocery store or farmers’ market and cook all of our meals at home, Adam, Cari and I have proved that one can stay fairly well fed while spending damn close to 50 dollars a week. They key to this success, of course, is the cooking-all-of-our-meals-at-home part.

So, what is one to do when traveling? Well, readers, I’m about to find out. Read the rest of this entry »
