Cari’s spending: The expensive sandwich edition

Well, we did a crappy job with the budget this week. We knew were going to go over when we had: an eggplant parm sub for me and a meatball sub for Billy on Saturday ($15.90), followed by that lunch at New Seasons debacle on Sunday ($26.56), followed by a celebratory lunch on Thursday ($26.00, but who cares! We’re having a girl!). I didn’t expect we’d also blow it on the groceries, too. But we did.

Are you noticing that we only really screw up when Billy and I are making food decisions together? Each of us does well on our own, but put us together and we just want to eat spendy sandwiches. I didn’t realize that before.

Where did the extra grocery spending go? Well, we needed bread flour, twice, so there’s $12 right there. And I bought a pint of ice cream twice, so there’s another $8. Other than that, it’s the serious fetal demands for orange juice, apples, pears, oranges, and bananas. This kid has me consuming massive quantities of fruit. We either need to up the food budget to allow for the fetus or I need to rethink the ice cream. Although some weeks we are managing to meet the budget anyway… I don’t know… Gah. Pass the ice cream.

The breakdown:

Conflicting priorities

I’ll admit it. I have a big crush on New Seasons. That’s where we do all of our non-farmer’s market shopping. They’ve got absolutely gorgeous, mostly organic produce. The shelf tags are color-coded so you can tell what’s local at a glance, and the local options are many. It’s not at all hard to shop entirely local there. And they do stuff like this. And the staff, well, Portlanders, let’s just admit it. The percentage of beautiful people staffing the New Seasons locations? Pretty damn high. (If I get brave enough, I’ll get a photo of my Produce crush one of these days to show you. He’s something. All the produce employees wear fishing-style knives in sheaths on their belts for opening boxes, and for slicing into apples to give you a taste of the goods, etc. Most of them wear their knives on their hips. My guy wears his at the small of his back. The appeal of this is inexplicable, but undeniable. You have to see it for yourself… Swoon…)

(Really damn good) dinner for three, plus lunch for one = $9.20

dinner

Are you sitting down? Get this. I did some math. As I was rolling out the dough for the tortillas yesterday evening, I got to thinking about Tama’s post that originally inspired me to make my own tortillas. She’d figured out that 9 tortillas cost her 40 cents. That’s 40 cents for all of them, not each. So I got to wondering how much our whole meal would add up to. Since not all the ingredients had been purchased in the last week or so, and so no receipts handy, I pulled the prices off the New Seasons website, and then did some rough guess (fuzzy?) math based on the amounts used in this meal. (We do all our non-farmer’s-market shopping at New Seasons. Yes, it’s kinda spendy there. No, I’m not going to start shopping elsewhere. But that’s a post for another day.)

Cari’s spending, week one: Under budget, thankyouverymuch

tortillas

But not by much, and we still have to get through the weekend. We’ve spent $108.82 this week. I think the planning has paid off so we should have plenty of food still in the house to get us through, except for peanut butter. We need more of that. But peanut butter won’t break the budget, so I’m pretty confident we’ll end the week under budget.

This was an easy week, though. In the interest of not having to do too much math (Lit major, then MFA. Not so much with the math), everything that was already in the house before the project began is free, though I did not go out and stock up on staples before things got underway. This week I made split pea soup entirely from things already in the house. I made black beans that were already in the house. Flour, oils, vinegars, rice, quinoa all already in the house. And still we’re coming in less than $20 under budget. Read the rest of this entry »
