Casseroles, Change and a City-Specific Challenge

I take off for New York in a couple of hours to host my Fifth Annual Casserole Party (if you haven’t already registered, there are still a few spots available). I’ll be there for exactly one week. Since I failed to report my spending on Wednesday, and even though my fiscal week technically begins on Thursday (and I reallyreallyreally want to pretend the 2 a.m. Taco Bell I had last night didn’t actually happen), I’m going to “restart” today. Yes, I’m going to attempt, yet again, to eat well on only $50 while in the Big Apple.

Though I have a wallet full of coupons and a kitchen in my little Brooklyn home away from my big Kansas City home, I have no commissary stash, no freezer full of pig innards and no bottle of Sriracha to make even the inedible edible. So I’ll be starting from scratch—while trying to sneak in a dinner at Calcutta on 6th Street—and attempting to spend only $50. I sort-of, almost, barely did it last time, with a little help from my friends. You think I can do it again?

I’m back. And I’m broke.

ambiance

As you may already know, I realized pretty early on that this project made me a smarter spender—not only at the grocery store, but in life. I just didn’t know how much smarter until Adam, Cari and I decided to go on what I thought was a much-needed hiatus.

French Press, I Hardly Knew Ye

french_press

My French press during its 15 minutes...

My dad came up to Kansas City on Friday to help my uncle move. Because they worked well into the evening I made him spaghetti with meat sauce (with tomatoes and bison beef from my CSA, of course) and he stayed the night, even though there was a comedy show happening in my dining room (literally, not a dinner gone awry or anything).

As any good daughter who has a memory foam mattress and a dad with a creaky old back would do, I gave my him my bedroom and slept on the couch (the comedians were in my guest room).

Like me, my dad is a coffee drinker (and peanut butter addict). Unlike me, he is an early riser. But on Saturday morning I, too, woke early… to the saddest sound ever. Read the rest of this entry »

Saving Money on Food… So What?

Coin Jar

Because I never kept track of how much I spent on food (or anything, really) before I began this project, I don’t know exactly how much money I’m pocketing each month by budgeting only $50 a week for my meals. If I had to take a wild guess, though, I’d say I’m spending about $200 a month less than I was before. A few months ago, I wouldn’t think twice before buying a $4 skim latte (or two) each day or going out to a $60 dinner with friends just because I didn’t feel like cooking… even if it meant I overdrew my bank account sometimes, which I did.

I have never been good with money; as far as I was concerned rules were made to be broken and money was made to be spent (I say ‘was’ because I never manage to retain any of it). And while I still sort-of live by those mantras, doing this project has forced me to pay more attention to where my money is going. Sure, I’m still spending it (and still eating well, though it requires a little more work than getting expensive take out, or even using the “best” ingredients when I cook at home), I’m just spending better and I’ve even let myself begin to toy with the ‘B’ word: budget. Emily’s Spending, Week 3: I’m Not Counting the Pot Brownies

twenty_three_dollars

Last week, I wondered what kind of asshole couldn’t survive on a $50-a-week food budget. Turns out I’m that kind of asshole. At least when I’m traveling. I packed up and took off for Bonnaroo, a music festival in Tennessee, on Thursday and because I was camping on site for three days, my options were overpriced vendor fare or a backpack full of non-perishables including—yes—peanut butter. Considering I’d already spent $25 on my CSA for the week it was going to be a challenge, anyway. I stayed pretty close to $25 when I hit a big box store I’d rather not name (out of shame) for my camp food, but what really got me was the coffee. Because I was too lazy to boil my own water at a campsite, I allowed myself to go over budget to keep caffeinated. At $3 each, two coffees a day, I ended up sending $18 alone just to stay awake. And we won’t even count what I may or may not have spent on magic brownies.

Not only did I go over budget, I did not eat well (even though other people at Bonnaroo managed to). So I’m considering last week a major FAIL. But it taught me something very important, at least something very important about this project. Read the rest of this entry »
