Emily’s Spending (Vacation)

So, I said I was going to keep track of my spending while traveling through the marvelous Pacific Northwest. That—well—it just didn’t happen. I am slightly ashamed considering we took more than a week of before Labor Day, but slightly less ashamed since this was my first vacation from the Internet in more than two years. So I didn’t want to have to worry about anything. And I got to eat Voodoo Doughnuts and smoked fish pizza by the ocean. So there’s that.

But since getting back on Satudray, I had one meal out ($8), picked up my CSA ($25) and bought a few pounds of Honeycrisp Apples ($10). Oh, and there were those two lattes because I had no milk for my coffee when I returned ($8). Not quite a success, but not a failure, either, right?

Tomorrow is a new week, and considering I’m pretty damn broke, I don’t see how I could go over $50, even if I wanted to. Which I don’t.

Emily’s Spending, Week 6: I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends

Brooklyn Label's Duck Bacon (not done justice with my iPhone)

Perhaps we should change the name of this project from “Eating Well on $50 a Week” to “How to Get Free Food While Pocketing an Extra $50 a Week.” While that may be pushing it a bit, I have to admit I have eaten incredibly well this week (far exceeding $50 worth of food) and have managed to stay under budget. I take zero credit for this so-called “achievement.”

As I mentioned before I took off on my trip to the Northeast last week, I spent three days at a summer share some of my friends have in the Poconos. I contributed some sides and some mixers, but for the most part, the food was taken care of. On the way back I made an unwise meal decision that cost me $9 (embarssing details after the jump) but followed it up with a delicious $11 salad topped with pulled pork. Monday I bought myself breakfast on the go, but after that and until I bought myself coffee this morning (free coffee at the Nerve office!), everything I have consumed since then (including delicious duck bacon from Brooklyn Label yesterday and street meat with my friend Zach who writes the Midtown Lunch blog today)  has been given to me, made for me or purchased for me. I say this not because I am complaining–I never turn down food, let alone free food–but because I wonder, is it cheating?

I can say, without a doubt, that there is no way I would have been able to stick to budget this week if it weren’t for other people so generously sharing food with me.

My measly contributions to my own meals this week, after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Super Simple Summer Salads: Cucumber and Tomato

cucumber_salad

There are few things I hate more than wasting food so before I left town Thursday I made sure to use up at least the majority of the perishables I had in the house. I had an abundance of CSA tomatoes and cucumbers so I decided to make one of my favorite simple salads. It took less than five minutes to prepare and I had enough for a free airplane dinner and even gave a Gladware full to the friend who drove me to the airport. Plus I got to use some of the basil I have growing on the balcony.

Recipe after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Eating Out Well on $50 a Week?

At this point, I think we can all agree that eating well on 50 bucks a week really isn’t that hard. Sure, there are challenges and we sometimes cheat, but if we are careful at the grocery store or farmers’ market and cook all of our meals at home, Adam, Cari and I have proved that one can stay fairly well fed while spending damn close to 50 dollars a week. They key to this success, of course, is the cooking-all-of-our-meals-at-home part.

So, what is one to do when traveling? Well, readers, I’m about to find out. Read the rest of this entry »
